Every girl should have a poem
or a song,
to know she’s touched a heart so deep
She dances through my words,
spinning sideways into phrases that aren’t even hers as I sleep
I can’t leave her behind.
I look everywhere and find her eyes.
I change the color of hair, scent, style,
She still finds a way in.
Slimming between paragraphs
she telegraphs
a twitch of a lip
or a finger slip down my page.
In time
I may forget her,
regret her
but for now
I let her
write herself through me
Because,
Every girl should have a poem.
Remembering the Words
Learning to speak
A silent child
Good girl when quiet
Dark and wild
Eyes open wide
To take in as much of the world as she can
To try to understand
Still confused why
Silence
Marked her as a victim
But she endures
even when goaded past it
Survives
In silence,

O fingerprint on my left middle finger
I have abused you,
and used you,
and yet your loops and swirls have ever returned
You have been burned
cut
scraped
scratched
bitten and yet
Through all, you stay attached
The power you wield can’t be matched
you make me unique
It’s true
I wouldn’t be entirely me without you
and you are all I witness
when I’m cut off in traffic
and I seek
a means
to question another’s driving fitness

Visible Bodies
Yesterday I did a photo shoot for A project called Visible Bodies: Transgender Narratives Retold
It is a community project with the goal to ’empower trans people and educate cis gender people’. Some of you know, I haven’t always been comfortable with my gender identity. For a long time I felt I was expected to pick one and go all in, but neither gender fits me very well. Over time I learned that I don’t hate my body, I just hate the role in society that was expected of it. Because of projects like Visible Bodies where trans people can use their own voices and speak their truths, I’ve realized that the difficulty doesn’t lay within me, that the culture itself needs to be reshaped to serve all humanity, including myself, and that made all the difference. With Visible Bodies I can give back and add my voice as a gender queer performer telling my story too. Everyone’s story is unique, and it can not be over stated how much speaking out and being heard as trans, breaking that barrier of invisibility, can heal and strengthen a broken soul, and change the hearts of others.
